The inscription is engraved on a re-used lintel, now broken into three pieces, found during the archaeological investigations in the complex (1980-1995). The text is carved on the back face of the lintel, originally not exposed; the back of the object is in fact decorated. The formulary links the inscription to the baptistery pertaning to the church, built at the beginning of the 5th century. The most important syllogae do not transmit this text, that is displayed in an addition to the Cotton Vitellius Manuscript (London, BL, Cotton Vitellius A. XIX, f. 88r), containing the life of St. Cuthbert by Beda. Other texts of some inscriptions from Roman churches are displayed in the same manuscript (see Agostinelli 2010 and Agostinelli 2012, pp. 195-196) . |
